Solid team effort nets Mitchell boys golf top-five finish at Pierre Invitational

Aug. 27—PIERRE — A strong overall team performance helped the Mitchell High School boys golf team post its first top-five finish of the season on Tuesday.

Boosted by Asher Dannenbring’s round of 1-under 71, the Kernels secured fifth place at the Pierre Invitational at Hillsview Golf Course with a team score of 306. The event featured 13 schools in attendance and 88 total individuals.

Dannenbring carded three birdies in his round to secure an eighth-place finish. In total, 12 golfers on the day shot an even-par round of 72 or better for the event, including five rounds in the 60s.

Other Kernel performances include Marshall Widstrom’s 28th-place finish with a round of 5-over-77. Carter McCormick finished in 31st with a 6-over-78, and Everett Morrison shot an 80 en route to finishing in 43rd. Jordan Meyerink (81) finished in 45th, and Brady Reiners (85) came in 59th.

Pierre completed the event sweep, finishing with a cumulative score of 273 to win the team competition by three strokes over Watertown, while Sawyer Sonnenschein carded a bogey-free round of 8-under-64 to claim individual honors, finishing with eight birdies.

Watertown’s Kaden Rylance also finished with eight birdies for his round, but a bogey on the par-4 12th hole was the difference, as he finished second after a 7-under 65. Pierre’s Luke Olson and Nick Bothum shot rounds of 4-under-68 to come in third and fourth, respectively, and Watertown’s Jonathan Lake (69) completed the top-five.

Behind the Governors and Arrows in the team standings, Brandon Valley finished in third with a score of 291, and Yankton came home fourth with a 300, finishing ahead of the Kernels by six strokes.

Winner Area also competed at the tournament, coming in 10th with a team score of 325. Individually, Karson Keiser shot a 3-over 75 to finish in 22nd.

Mitchell is back in action at the Huron Invitational at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Broadland Creek Golf Course.
