WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF: White steps in to coach DACC women’s golf

Jul. 27—DANVILLE — While some coaches enter a new situation flying blind, Randy White is flying into the DACC women’s golf coaching job with a full view.

The former Covington High School golf coach has years of experience and will start using that this season after taking over for Debbie Toler earlier this month.

“I was an assistant golf professional at Harrison Park in the early 90’s and then I took over as the head professional at Rivercrest Golf Course for five years,” White said. “I was an assistant to Guy Pearcey at Schlarman and took over as co-coach at Covington for 20 years for the boys and two years for the girls and I ended up getting the call for the DACC women and I happened to be available.”

White had been working in a volunteer capacity for the Lady Jaguars during the past spring season.

“I volunteered to help in this last spring season for Deb and her three golfers on the team and I was lucky because i taught two of the girls. So I knew them and it worked out good and the change was easier.

“I knew Debbie from the Interclub Challenges we had in the past. I went and helped Debbie and helped looked at the player’s swings, so we had a great rapport. It worked out good and the transitions from there was pretty simple.”

With the season set to start in August, White does not have much time to get going, but he said he will thanks to some help.

“It has been a little hectic but it is fun,” White said. “I had some resources for being in the golf industry and it helped and (DACC Athletics Director) Tim Bunton has been a great help and I have known (DACC men’s golf coach) Terry French for many years. I used to run the Danville Tournament at RiverCrest and he was on the board for a long time and Debbie has been helpful as well. When I ask a question, she does not hesitate to answer.”

The Lady Jaguars will be undermanned, but White is already building for more players for the 2025 season.

“We only have two girls this year and I have had verbal commitments for 2025,” White said. “So I will have the two that will carry over to 2025 and I am working on a third and some feelers out for girls in the Champaign area.

“It’s a great opportunity for younger ladies entering their senior year to go to DACC and get some education and get a tuition waiver and we would like the opportunity to get more. We have eight waivers available and we would like to use them.”
