Wes Smith joins Albany State football as defensive line coach

ALBANY – Albany State University second-year Head Football Coach Quinn Gray, Sr. has announced the hiring of Weston Smith as the new Defensive Line Coach.

“I am honored and privileged to come to Albany State to work with Coach Gray, the entire staff, and the student-athletes,” says Smith. “It’s an exciting time to be a Golden Ram and I can’t wait to get to work this season.”

Prior to joining ASU, Smith gained extensive experience as a student film analyst for The Scouting Academy. His role involved evaluating players, scouting, creating player SWOT analysis, and generating scouting reports for NFL players using the Telemetry Film database.

He gained valuable experience at Wake Forest University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Appalachian State, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In his previous roles as a defensive analyst, some of Smith’s responsibilities included assisting Wake Forest in achieving its seventh straight postseason bowl game as a member of the Safety Coaching staff. He also contributed to a .79 percent win rate for two seasons for UAB, helping secure the 2020 CUSA Conference Championship and 2021 Independence Bowl victories. He also contributed to Appalachian State’s .93 percent win rate that helped secure the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Championship and win in the New Orleans Bowl.

Smith started his coaching career in 2016-17 as a Graduate Assistant/Defensive Line Coach at Missouri Baptist University. He evaluated and recruited prospective student-athletes, and coordinated and facilitated video operations.

The Kannapolis, NC native earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) in 2016 and earned a master’s degree in sports management in 2018 from Missouri Baptist University. During his time as a 49er, Smith played football in the spring 2014 semester and remained through the 2015 season. His collegiate career began in 2013 as a pitcher with the 49ers baseball team.
