Washington County high school football: Ranking the top 25 returning players on defense


With the 2024 Washington County football season right around the corner, here’s a look at the top 25 returning players on defense.

1. Trevor Sowers, Boonsboro

Sowers, a senior linebacker, had 99.5 tackles, including 10.5 for losses and three sacks, with five forced fumbles last year.

2. Liam Hall, Saint James

Hall, a junior linebacker, had 98 tackles, including five for losses and one sack, with three interceptions and a fumble recovery last year.

3. Ceonta Wilmore, Williamsport

Wilmore, a senior linebacker and punter, had 55 tackles, including 10 for losses and a sack, with two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a defensive TD. He averaged 34.3 yards on his 33 punts, including five inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and a long of 60.

4. Sam Shank, Clear Spring

Shank, a senior linebacker, had 61 tackles, including nine for losses and four sacks, with a forced fumble last year.

5. Irayvion Hart, South Hagerstown

Hart, a senior defensive back, had 52 tackles, including 1.5 for losses, with three interceptions and a fumble recovery last year.

6. Kyle Duvall, Williamsport

Duvall, a senior linebacker, had 112 tackles, a pick-6 and a forced fumble last year.

7. Seth Possinger, Clear Spring

Possinger, a senior linebacker, had 85 tackles, including five for losses and a sack, with a fumble recovery last year.

8. James Jackson, North Hagerstown

Jackson, a junior linebacker, had 83 tackles, including six for losses and two sacks, with two forced fumbles and an interception last year.

9. Drew Rupp, Saint James

Rupp, a junior defensive back, had 40 tackles, including three for losses, with a forced fumble last year.

10. Ayden Weakfall, Smithsburg

Weakfall, a junior defensive back, had 24 tackles and three interceptions last year.

11. Ty’Qwell Fauntleroy, North Hagerstown

Fauntleroy, a junior linebacker, had 64 tackles last year, including four for losses and a sack.

12. Tyler Ward, Smithsburg

Ward, a senior linebacker, had 85 tackles, including five for losses with a sack, and three forced fumbles last year.

13. Hayden Ritchie, Boonsboro

Ritchie, a senior linebacker, had 68.5 tackles, including 5.5 for losses and three sacks, with two forced fumbles last year.

14. Russell Colliere, Boonsboro

Colliere, a senior linebacker, had 65 tackles, including three for losses, with two forced fumbles and a pick-6 last year.

15. Brayden Sisk, South Hagerstown

Sisk, a senior linebacker, had 75 tackles, including three for losses and two sacks, with an interception and a forced fumble last year.

16. Xavier Bowie, Williamsport

Bowie, a sophomore lineman, had 54 tackles last year, including nine for losses and two sacks.

17. Shawn Thomas, Hancock

Thomas, a senior defensive back, had 19 tackles, an intercepton, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery last year.

18. Logan Atkinson, Boonsboro

Atkinson, a junior linebacker, had 52 tackles last year, including seven for losses and 1.5 sacks.

19. Aiden Carter, Saint James

Carter, a sophomore lineman, had 27 tackles, including five for losses and two sacks, and a blocked field goal last year.

20. Caleb Thompson, South Hagerstown

Thompson, a senior linebacker, had 36 tackles, including eight for losses and two sacks, with an interception and a fumble recovery last year.

21. Kevin Brown, Saint James

Brown, a senior punter, averaged 32.3 yards on his 26 punts, including nine inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and a long of 48 last year.

22. Gideon Notarianni-Stephens, South Hagerstown

Notarianni-Stephens, a senior defensive back, had 44 tackles last year.

23. David Grayton, Williamsport

Grayton, a junior defensive back, had 34 tackles last year.

24. Jayten McCarty, Hancock

McCarty, a sophomore linebacker, had 43 tackles last year with a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception.

25. Alex Matthews, Clear Spring

Matthews, a junior defensive back, had 28 tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery last year.
