Former Florida golfers Alejandro Tosti (2015-18) and Camilo Villegas (2000-04) competed at the Paris Olympics over the weekend.
Tosti finished tied for 18th after shooting eight shots under par over four rounds. The Argentinian shot under par in every round but delivered his best score (-3) on Thursday in the opening round.
Villegas had a much tougher tournament, shooting nine over par. He ended the first round five over par and struggled with holes No. 5 and 7 consistently over the weekend. A disastrous three-over on 18 during the second round sealed his fate. The Colombian finished 57th out of 58 participants (two withdrew).
Florida’s golf program is among the best in the country, but Villegas was one of the first golfers in Gainesville to receive some national attention. He was the first Gator to be nominated for the Ben Hogan Award, which is given to the best collegiate golfer in the country. He was also the fourth player in school history to earn All-America honors all four years.
Tosti came to Florida about a decade later as the top Argentinian amateur. He made an immediate impact with the Gators and won the SEC Championship in 2016-17.
