Tiger Woods has an excuse for another missed cut at a major championship.
The assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Woods, who missed the cut at the 152nd British Open at Royal Troon Friday after a two-day total 14-over 156, told the BBC earlier this week he was not in the “right frame of mind” upon arrival in Scotland following Saturday’s shooting in Pennsylvania in which Trump was clipped in the right ear.
Trump, who lives in Palm Beach, was wearing a large bandage on his ear at the Republican National Convention, where he accepted the GOP’s nomination for president Thursday night.
Woods, who lives on Jupiter Island, said he watched the coverage of the attempt of Trump’s life while flying to Scotland.
“I didn’t accomplish a lot because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind,” he said. “It was a long night (because of the assassination attempt) and that’s all we watched the entire time on the way over here.
“I didn’t sleep at all on the flight, and then we just got on the golf course.”
Woods, 48, has a history with Trump. With Trump being an avid golfer and owner of several courses, including two in Palm Beach County, the two have played together. In 2019, Trump awarded Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his term as president.
But Woods historically has been very careful when dipping into politics. When asked in 2018 about his relationship with then-president Trump, Woods said: “Well, he’s the president of the United States. No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office.”
Woods, a three-time winner of the Claret Jug, spent the week preparing for the tournament but the results were much the same as his most recent attempts to win another major.

Woods opened with a 79 Thursday and carded a 77 Friday, the first time in his career he has shot 77 or worse for the first two rounds of a major. He now has missed the cut in three consecutive majors for just the second time in his career and he’s failed to finish six of the previous eight majors he’s played since his February 2021 auto accident, including four missed cuts.
