SOUTH ZANESVILLE — More youth was served at the Zanesville District Golf Association Junior Amateur.
Eighth grader Colton Gress, from River View, shot a two-day total of 143 to become the youngest ZDGA Juniors champion in event history. His win comes just a few weeks after his freshman brother Gavin, another Black Bear, was the youngest runner-up in the ZDGA Amateur.
Colton Gress, who shot 2-under-par 68 during Wednesday’s final round at EagleSticks, edged John Glenn senior-to-be Noah Dever (75-69 — 144) and Gavin Gress (75-71 — 146) to head the 10-player championship flight. Gress and Dever had the only rounds under par in the two-day event, which was also held on Tuesday at Vista.
John Glenn’s C.J. Dolan (76-74 — 150) and Hayden Gensor (78-74 — 152) was fourth and fifth, respectively.
John Glenn grad Addy Burris (81-77 — 158) won the women’s collegiate flight, while Caden Pieper (79-74 — 153) took the collegiate men’s flight.
Pieper nipped West M’s Jack Porter, who finished three back at 156 after rebounding with a 1-over 71 in the final round. Adam Johnson (83-75 — 158) was five back.
Chase McCauley shot a final-round 78 to finish at 162 and top the junior boys first flight; Cale Preston was second (83-81 — 164), Xander Smalley (84-81 — 165) and Cooper Briggs (88-77 — 165) third and Rocco Stanton (82-84 — 166) fifth.
Haven Jenkins took the junior girls flight with a 175, as her final-round 86 helped her finish one shot better than Makayla Gress (83-93 — 176), the third golfer in the family clan. Anna Derwacter was third (104-99 — 203).
