Texas-ex golfer Scottie Scheffler cries to national anthem after winning Olympic gold

Texas alumnus Scottie Scheffler proved why he’s the world’s best golfer at the 2024 Paris Olympics, collecting a gold medal on his very first try.

The former Longhorn is known to have a somewhat stoic personality. However, the love and pride he has for the United States caused him to crack. He stood on the medal stand with his hand over his heart as the “Star Spangled Banner” played. Scheffler held it in for half a minute before cracking toward the end of the national anthem.

Scheffler finished with a final score of 19-under, saving his best for the final round in which he scored nine-under. He didn’t bogey the entire tournament and is the first golfer to ever enter the Olympics as the world number one and walk out with a gold medal.

The Texas native only won a single major this year at the 2024 Masters Tournament, but the Olympics are bigger than one person. Scheffler represented a nation of millions and made them proud — that warrants more than a few tears.

Why was Scottie Scheffler arrested?

Scheffler was arrested outside of Valhalla Golf Club ahead of the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship. He was booked on a second-degree charge of assaulting a police officer, a third-degree charge of criminal mischief, a charge of reckless driving and for disregarding signals from officers who were directing traffic.

Charges were dropped in the following months as Scheffler called the incident a “miscommunication.”

“I hold no ill will toward Officer [Bryan] Gillis. I wish to put this incident behind me and move on, and I hope he will do the same,” Scheffler said in an Instagram story, referencing the Louisville police officer who arrested him outside Valhalla Golf Club. “Police officers have a difficult job and I hold them in high regard. This was a severe miscommunication in a chaotic situation.”
