Colton Swartz, a Fleming Island High graduate, hit the shot of his life to get into contention in the 108th Florida Amateur.
Swartz, who is a rising sophomore at Florida Southern, made an albatross at the par-5 ninth hole of the BallenIsles Country Club South Course on June 5 and went on to post a 3-under 69 to tie for fifth with Luke Balaskiewicz of Jacksonville, who is entering the University of North Florida in the fall, and Joseph Trim of Tampa.
Windermere Prep rising senior Santiago Navarro of Winter Garden birdied five of his last six holes at the South Course to post a 6-under-par 66 and tie William Block of Plantation and Derek Busby of Palm Beach Gardens for the lead.
Navarro, a native of Venezuela, was even par for the day before beginning his first run at No. 12. His only par during that stretch was at the par-5 17th hole.Â
Busby, a former mini-tour player who has regained his amateur status, had two eagles, at the par-5 seventh and 17th holes of the South Course. Block had a run of four birdies on five holes from Nos. 12-16 to fuel his run to a share of the lead.Â
Swartz was 1-under through his first eight holes before jarring his second shot at the ninth. He gave two shots back with a double bogey at the 12th hole but played his last six holes 1-under, with no bogeys.
Thomas Karona of Plantation is fourth after a 68 at the South Course.Â
Past Florida Amateur champion Jeff Dennis, a former UNF player and coach shot 71 at the South Course and is tied for 13th.Â
Charlie Woods, the son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, bogeyed two of his last three holes at the South Course and shot 74 to tie for 37th.Â
The East Course played notably tougher in the first round. Lance LaCombe of Jacksonville had the lowest score of the wave on that course with an even-par 72 to tie for 17th. Players will switch courses for the second round and after the cut is made to the low-70, plus ties, the East Course will be used for the final two rounds.Â
