Rory McIlroy is playing carefree golf, as the pressure to end his long drought for a major championship had finally ended last month, when he donned the green jacket at last by topping the field in the 2025 Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club.
With a career grand slam under his belt, the 36-year-old Northern Irishman now turns his attention to winning another major, this time at the 2025 PGA Championship, which will be held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
McIlroy has a solid resume at Quail Hollow, which is also why many believe he will be among the top contenders for the title. However, the five-time major winner doesn’t seem to be especially enamored of the course.
“I thought it was going to feel different just because it was a major championship, and I got out on the course yesterday, and it felt no different than last year at the Wells Fargo,” McIlroy said on Wednesday (h/t NUCLR GOLF). “The rough is maybe a little juicier.”
Nevertheless, there is no denying the greatness of McIlroy when he’s at Quail Hollow Club, where he has won four times before. That includes his victory at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, in which he carded 17-under.
In addition, the two-time PGA Championship winner owns a sparkling 69.48 scoring average at Quail Hollow, and since his first appearance there, McIlroy has put up a cumulative score to par of -102 through 50 rounds, per Justin Ray of Twenty First Group. To compare, Rickie Fowler is next best with a -47 through 45 rounds.
It remains to be seen whether McIlroy will have another strong performance at Quail Hollow, but his course resume and recent body of work suggest he’ll be just fine.
On the season, McIlroy has three wins with five top 10s and eight top 25s in eight starts.
