Once again, Fennessy running away from the competition on Women’s State Amateur

Jul. 30—Defending champion Carys Fennessy one-upped herself on Tuesday, firing a 3-under-par 69 to open a seven-shot lead at the New Hampshire Women’s Amateur at Rochester Country Club.

A senior-to-be at Dover High School, Fennessy was the only golfer to shoot par (72) in Monday’s first round, then was the only golfer to break par on Tuesday. The closest competitor heading into Wednesday’s final round is 15-year-old Mady Savary, who shot a 75 on Tuesday after opening with a 73.

The scenario is familiar to Fennessy, who took a 13-stroke lead into the final round last summer on the way to the crown.

Tuesday, Fennessy was a model of consistency, making 11 pars, five birdies and two bogeys.

“Today was pretty consistent compared to yesterday,” Fennessy told NHGA. “I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, so it gave me a chance at a lot of birdie putts.”

Fennessy said she’s taking nothing for granted heading into the final round.

“Going into tomorrow, I’m just going to play the game that I have been playing and hopefully extend that lead,” she said. “But just to have that padding is important.”

Savary, a Franklin resident representing Youth on Course, holds a five-stroke lead over Julianna Megan and Eva Gonzales, who stand tied for third. Both Megan, of Youth on Course, and Gonzales, of NHGA e-Club, shot 77s on Tuesday.
