Ole Miss football adds Sun Belt team to 2025 schedule after cancellation of USC games |

OXFORD — Ole Miss football has a new opponent to open the 2025 season.

The Rebels reached an agreement with Georgia State to play at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Week One, according to a report by FBS Schedules — a news site that reports on college football scheduling.

The game fills a vacancy left by the cancellation of a home-and-home series with Southern Cal, originally scheduled for 2025 and 2026. The SEC is committed to eight conference games in 2025, but could move to nine in 2026. With USC joining the Big Ten and its nine-game conference scheduled, both sides had reason to want out of that series.

Georgia State originally had agreed to visit Oxford in 2026, and will now do so a year earlier.

The meeting between the two programs will be the first. Georgia State went 7-6 and finished 3-5 in the Sun Belt last season under Shawn Elliott, who left for an assistant job at South Carolina. He was replaced by Georgia assistant Dell McGee.

The change leaves the Rebels with just two nonconference games scheduled for 2026. Even if the SEC moved to nine conference games, Ole Miss will need another nonconference opponent.
