OHS keeps rolling with DC Invitational win

Owensboro High School continued its early season hot streak by winning the Daviess County Invitational golf tournament.

The Red Devils won their fourth boys golf tournament in six events this season, playing through a couple of rain showers on an otherwise humid Friday at Ben Hawes Golf Course.

Nolan Warren also kept up his stellar play early this season, shooting 3-under 68 to lead Owensboro to a 290 score.

Marshall County was second with 299, just edging McCracken County at 300.

Daviess County shot 311, with Grant Broughton firing 69 and beating McCracken’s Landon Hunt in a scorecard playoff after he’d also shot 69.

This was the third individual win of the season for Warren, who is a senior.

“I’ve been playing good all summer,” Warren said. “We got off to a pretty good start at Henderson. Marshall County I won that one and kind of kept rolling from there.

“I knew we’d have a really good team. I’m excited to play with all my friends again, I knew we’d be pretty solid. They’re all really good guys, they put in the work, I’m not surprised.”

Warren said he made a couple of bogeys on the back nine, after it rained for a second time during the day, but he got things back under control to finish 3-under.

Warren finished with five birdies.

Will Rickard was next for Owensboro with 71. Jax Malone (75) and Will Hume (76) also scored for the Red Devils.

OHS also finished second at Henderson County, and was tied for fifth in the Kentucky Golf Coaches Association tournament in Lexington against the top teams in the state.

“We wanted to go and step up a class, I wanted to see if what I had was what I had,” OHS coach Pat Hume said of the KGCA that was two weeks ago. “For us to not see the course, to get off to a pretty good start and tie for fifth, it was nice to see. I think our guys were curious to see how they stacked up against the biggest teams in the state. I think they came out of there with a lot of confidence. That’s kind of helped us.

“We’ve played the last two weeks pretty solid, traveled from Paducah to Lexington. When school starts we can practice some more, with Monday 9-hole matches and then we play Saturday invitationals.”

Daviess County also had Logan Mewes with 74, Locas Ward with 83 and Walker Ferguson with 85.

Owensboro Catholic shot 315 with John Wathen shooting 77. Luke Estes and Houston Danzer each shot 79, and Tanner McFadden shot 80.

Apollo shot 408 and was led by Brady Robbins with 92. Beau Brock (103), Kamdyn Ulmer (106) and Grant Connor (107) also scored for Apollo.

Hancock County shot 315 and was led by Jacob Shultz with 73. Dec Lewko shot 76, while Kolby Keown, Jaxon Blake and Ethan Heavrin each shot 82.

Muhlenberg County shot 337 and was led by Josh Randall with 76. Cy Tudor (82), Luke Hardin (83) and Kent Ginsburg (96) also scored for Muhlenberg.

Ohio County shot 340 and was led by Shawn Cotton with 72. Bowen Coots (88), Andrew Figg (89) and Landon Hiner (91) also scored for Ohio County.
