The Knicks picked up their second consecutive win, defeating the Phoenix Suns 112-98 on Sunday night at Madison Square Garden.
Here are some takeaways…
– The Knicks received a big boost to their rotation in this one, as both Jalen Brunson and Miles McBride returned from injury. Brunson missed a total of 15 games with a right ankle sprain while McBride was sidelined the last eight contests with a lingering groin issue.
Brunson made a bucket and dished three assists as he played eight minutes in the opening quarter. McBride provided an immediate spark off the bench, knocking down a pair of threes to help the Knicks carry a slim early advantage, despite committing seven turnovers as a team.
– New York cleaned things up, coughing up the ball just two more times in the second, and Karl-Anthony Towns had his way with the Suns. The big man produced 11 of his 15 first half points during the quarter (6-of-9 FG) and reeled in eight rebounds to help the Knicks push the lead out to double digits.
Phoenix struggled as a team offensively, but a big first half from Devin Booker helped keep them within 10. The superstar shooting guard has loved playing against the Knicks in his career, and he led all scorers with 20 points in the game’s first 24 minutes.
– Booker continued dominating coming out of the locker room, but the Knicks answered right back again. This time they were led by OG Anunoby, who continued his red hot shooting by knocking down seven consecutive shots (five threes) to push him above the 20-point mark for the tenth consecutive game.
– Anunoby’s surge helped New York open their largest lead of the game (19 points), but Phoenix refused to go away, and the combination of Booker and Bradley Beal quickly got them back within single digits early in the fourth.
This time it was Brunson who stepped up, picking up six massive points down the stretch to help the Knicks stave off the comeback attempt. The superstar point guard showed some signs of rust, but he finished with 15 points and six assists in a strong return.
– Anunoby was terrific, knocking down 13-of-17 shots (six threes) for a team-high 32 points. Towns was relatively quiet in the scoring department following his big second quarter, but he remained a force on the glass, reeling in a game-high 13 rebounds.
– Booker dropped 40 points for the Suns while Beal’s strong finish helped him contribute 16.
– The Knicks have won 50 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1995.
