Louisville’s Valhalla Golf Club to host Solheim Cup. What to know about LPGA Tour event

Major golf is returning to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville: The 2028 Solheim Cup, the women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup, will be played at the course, the LPGA announced Tuesday.

“We are thrilled to be selected to host the 2028 Solheim Cup. Valhalla has a history of providing compelling finishes, and we are excited to add this event to our championship lore,” Valhalla co-owner Jimmy Kirchdorfer said. “We look forward to welcoming golf fans from around the globe back to our Kentucky home for what promises to be an unforgettable week of competition and camaraderie.”

Valhalla is one of four venues (The Greenbrier, Muirfield Village and Gleneagles) that will host both the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup.

The Solheim Cup, a biennial team tournament between the top professional golfers from the United States and Europe, is hosted every two years and is considered one of the most prestigious international women’s professional team events.

The Solheim Cup, which will be played this year at Virginia’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, will be held in the Netherlands in 2026. Because of pandemic delays, the tournament is being held in back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024.The LPGA has not settled on a date for 2028, but it will be played in late summer or early fall. This year’s event is scheduled Sept. 13-15.

“Showcasing our extraordinary athletes at venues that hosted the world’s largest and most prestigious golf tournaments and that are recognizable to fans around the world will continue to elevate the LPGA Tour and Solheim Cup,” LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan said. “Hosting the 2028 Solheim Cup at Valhalla Golf Club, with its rich tradition of competitive excellence, exemplifies this commitment.”

The 2028 Solheim Cup will mark the first time the LPGA Tour has returned to the commonwealth in more than 50 years. The Bluegrass Invitational was held at Hunting Creek Country Club in Prospect from 1965 to 1974.

“Between the PGA Championship, the 150th Kentucky Derby, the upcoming U.S. Women’s National Team soccer match, and much more, 2024 has been a memorable and record-breaking year for sports in Louisville, and this announcement solidifies our reputation as one of America’s top cities for hosting major sporting events,” Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said.

The announcement comes three months after the Louisville course hosted the 2024 PGA Championship, won by Xander Schauffele.

Other major tournaments held at the course include the 1996 PGA Championship, where Mark Brooks defeated Kentucky native Kenny Perry in a playoff, and Tiger Woods‘ 2000 PGA Championship victory.

Hale Irwin won the 2004 Senior PGA Championship at the course and, in 2008, the United States won its fourth consecutive Ryder Cup over Europe at Valhalla. The 2011 Senior PGA Championship at the course was won by Tom Watson, who at the time broke the record for the oldest golfer to win a major. That record has since been broken.
