Local golf: Thompson Park set to host NNY-Man golf tournament for first time in 13 years

Aug. 1—WATERTOWN — Thompson Park will be hosting the Northern New York Six-Man Golf championship this week for the first time more than a decade.

Play at the annual event, which is now in its 88th year, will commence at 8 a.m. today at the Thompson Park Golf Course.

The last time the championship was held on the course in the park which overlooks Watertown was back in 2011 when it was known as Watertown Golf Club.

Since then, eight different courses held the event, including Carlowden in 2015 and 2020 and Ives Hill in 2017 when the host team won back to back titles.

Also after 2011, the St. Lawrence University course hosted the championship twice, including last year, with Potsdam Town and Country Club holding it twice as well.

The River Course in Louisville, Malone Golf Club, Tupper Lake Country Club, Gouverneur Country Club and Massena Country Club have also hosted the event over this stretch.

Last year, led by the father/son duo of Rick and Tyler Berkman, Potsdam repeated as champion by rallying on the final day to prevail at the St. Lawrence University Course in Canton.

Malone, which entered the second round leading by five strokes, placed second, with Carlowden finishing third.

Malone’s Ed Davis finished as the individual champion, recording birdies on the final two holes to edge out Tyler Berkman by one stroke.

The St. Lawrence and then Ives Hill teams have won the most team titles over the past 13 years with three each.

The Watertown Golf Club has won a pair of championships over this stretch, including in 2013 at Potsdam and in 2015 in Carlowden.

Ives Hill claimed the crown the last time the championship was held at Watertown Golf Club in 2011.

This year’s tournament includes 10 teams as along with Thompson Park, Carlowden, Potsdam, St. Lawrence and Malone teams, the event also includes squads from Gouverneur, Massena, Partridge Run, and C-Way Golf Club.
