Espanyol manager Manolo Gonzalez has expressed his reservations over rising star Joan Garcia’s possible transfer to arch-rivals Barcelona, following growing reports that the Blaugrana have reached an agreement in principle to sign the 24-year-old goalkeeper.
Speaking to RAC1 (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Manolo did not hold back when asked about the rumours. “I know he has strong Barça feelings. I’m not in his head, but I would be very surprised if he went to Barça,” he admitted.
“Because they have Ter Stegen and because they are their eternal rival, I would be very surprised… But I’m not in anyone’s head, and I don’t know what they’ll do.”
Barcelona are serious about Joan Garcia
Barcelona are reportedly prepared to meet Garcia’s €25 million release clause, which could rise to €30 million if the shot-stopper receives a call-up to the Spanish national team.
While the Catalan giants view Garcia as a long-term solution between the posts amid concerns over Ter Stegen’s injury history and uncertainty around Wojciech Szczesny, the Espanyol boss has his doubts about the timing and fit.

“What I’ve told him is to think it over carefully,” Manolo continued. “Because what he has to do now is play.”
The Espanyol coach made it clear that his priority is the player’s development, not the prestige of the club he joins.
“What I want is for him to go somewhere where he can play and be happy. To be a top player. Not to go somewhere where there’s a veteran goalkeeper who overtakes him because of his name. He has to keep playing and be a starter.”
Manolo’s comments come at a crucial time in Garcia’s career. The keeper had a breakthrough campaign with Espanyol and has been one of the standout performers in La Liga this season.
While interest from top clubs is expected, a move to the Camp Nou, especially given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs, adds an emotional and sporting complexity to any potential deal.
