Apostolos Stamatelopoulos has joined Motherwell on a three-year deal, with the Fir Park club holding the option of a further 12 months.

The 25-year-old Australian striker arrives from Newcastle Jets for an undisclosed fee, with manager Stuart Kettlewell calling it “a good bit of business”.

Stamatelopoulos earned his first cap as a second-half substitute in a June World Cup qualifier against Palestine.

“We’ve been looking to bring someone in who is a goalscorer,” Kettlewell told the club website.

“Apostolos has qualities that we’re looking to add to the squad.”

The 6ft centre forward had spells at Adelaide United and Western United before moving to the Jets in January 2021.

He scored 17 goals last season, taking his A-League tally to 24 from 60 outings.

“It’s great to finally say I’m a Motherwell player,” said Stamatelopoulos, who watched Sunday’s 0-0 League Cup draw with Partick Thistle at Fir Park.

“Seeing all the fans together and the boys playing, I just wanted to get out there.

“It’s been a long journey to get here but I can now focus on making an impact. I’m here to score goals, that’s my job. I will do my best to fulfil that.”
