Garry offers to train with Prates in Brazil, help Brazilian fighters rise up in UFC
After they beat each other up pretty good – one more than the other – Ian Machado Garry and Carlos Prates had a backstage encounter at UFC on ESPN 66.
After Garry (16-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) saw his welterweight star continue to rise when he handed Prates (21-7 MMA, 4-1 UFC) the first loss of his UFC career after four straight bonus-winning stoppages, they talked and agreed on one thing.
Prates, from Brazil, told Garry, an Irishman who has longstanding roots in Brazil and speaks Portuguese, he suspects they’ll meet again down the road.
Garry offered little objection to that, but also said he hopes he might train with Prates one day in a goal to help any fighter from Brazil rise up in the UFC.
Check out their post-fight meeting below.
Garry and Prates headlined UFC on ESPN 66 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo. Prates came on in the fourth and fifth rounds, particularly the fifth, but couldn’t find a finish after falling behind on the scorecards. Garry took a decision with a 49-46 and a pair of 48-47 scores.
After the fight, it was confirmed by the promotion that Garry will serve as a backup fighter at UFC 315 in Montreal in two weeks in case welterweight champion Belal Muhammad or challenger Jack Della Maddalena fall off the card.
