“He’s earned his spot on the roster.”

Not bad praise from your manager if you are a 16-year-old footballer at a Premier League giant.

They were the words of Ange Postecoglou on Tottenham teen Mikey Moore after he scored the winner – and his second pre-season goal – in the side’s 3-2 victory over Vissel Kobe.

It is not the first taste of senior action for the youngster either.

He made his senior debut as a substitute against Manchester City in May, becoming Tottenham’s youngest ever player to appear in the Premier League at 16 years, nine months and three days.

Moore’s pre-season performances have certainly got fans talking, understandable when considering his pedigree at youth level.

The versatile forward has come through the Spurs academy, featuring regularly for the club’s under-18s in 2022-23 as a schoolboy and helping the team complete an under-17 and under-18 Premier League Cup double.

He was a regular for the under-18s last season and is the youngest player to make a competitive appearance for Tottenham Under-21s.

In total, he has scored 19 goals and provided 13 assists at under-18 level, working out at 1.5 goal contributions per 90 minutes.

While it is far too soon to say that the teenager could be the club’s next Harry Kane – it will be hard for anyone to match his figures – comparing their contributions at academy level is interesting.

Famously, the Bayern Munich striker spent more time out on loan before he broke through into Tottenham’s senior team, but he did play for the under-21s.

According to data available, he played 13 games, scoring nine goals and providing nine assists. It works out out at 1.5 goal contributions per 90 minutes – equal to Moore.

At just 16, those working with Moore will be keen to temper expectations, but for fans, it will be hard not to get excited about the future of ‘one of their own’.
