Lake-Lehman graduate Michael Lugiano shot a 5-over 75, and Wyoming Seminary senior Nick Werner carded an 8-over 78 on Monday in the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur golf tournament at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Lugiano started on the south course front nine and was 1-under through five holes before weather halted play for about an hour and a half. He birdied the 210-yard par-3 third hole and parred the par-5 second and the par-4 first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. He bogeyed the par-4 eighth hole and went into the back nine at even par.
On the back nine, Lugiano bogeyed five of the nine holes to fall to 5-over 75 and into a tie for 126th.
Werner is tied for 190th. He played the north course Monday, starting on the 10th hole. He bogeyed the par-4 11th and the par-3 13th and double bogeyed the par-5 12th, but picked up a birdie on the 419-yard par-4 16th hole. However, he continued to struggle on the front nine, carding four bogeys and a double bogey. He added his second birdie of the day on the 426-yard par-4 seventh.
The two need to finish in the top 64 after two rounds to make the cut for the match-play portion of the event, which is scheduled to start Wednesday.
The winner gets exemption from qualifying for future U.S. Junior Amateurs and an exemption into the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont.
Lugiano tees off the second round Tuesday at 7:49 a.m. on the north course’s back nine.
Werner tees off the second round Tuesday at 1:43 p.m. on the south course’s first hole.
Charlie Woods, son of golf legend Tiger Woods, shot a 12-over 82 in the first round.
