The Mountain West has seen another coaching change late in the offseason.
The Fresno State football program announced Monday that Jeff Tedford is stepping down as head coach due to ongoing health problems, which prevented him from coaching the Bulldogs in their bowl game at the end of the 2023 season.
Taking over on an interim basis for 2024 at Fresno State is Tim Skipper, who is an assistant coach and linebackers coach. Skipper worked at Colorado State from 2012-14 as a linebackers coach under former coach Jim McElwain.
CSU plays at Fresno State on Nov. 23 in the second-to-last game of the regular season. Fresno State was picked third in the MW in the preseason poll.
It’s the Mountain West’s second July coaching change after Utah State’s Blake Anderson was fired earlier in the month. The Rams play Utah State on Nov. 29 in the season finale.
Entering his third season, CSU’s Jay Norvell is now the second-longest tenured coach in the league behind Air Force’s Troy Calhoun.
In 2024 the Rams will face eight coaches in their first year running their current program:
-
Fresno State (interim Tim Skipper)
-
Utah State (interim Nate Dreiling)
-
Nevada (Jeff Choate)
-
New Mexico (Bronco Mendenhall)
-
San Jose State (Ken Niumatalolo)
-
Wyoming (Jay Sawvel)
-
Oregon State (Trent Bray)
-
UTEP (Scotty Walden)
Another two (Northern Colorado and Colorado) have a coach in their second year leading their current program.
