SOUTH BEND — Is this the year?
Notre Dame football hasn’t won a national championship since 1988. There were near misses in 1989 and 1993. Then there was a BCS Championship Game appearance at the end of 2012 that ended with a thud in South Florida at the hand of Alabama.
College football playoff appearances in 2018 and 2020 ended forcefully in the semifinals.
With an expanded 12-team playoff this season, an experienced transfer quarterback in Riley Leonard, a shutdown secondary featuring two All-Americans in Benjamin Morrison and Xavier Watts and what seems on paper as a favorable schedule, Notre Dame is positioned well for a legitimate run to college football’s mountaintop.

The Irish open their annual fall camp on Wednesday ahead of an intriguing season opener at Texas A&M on Aug. 31. New Aggies coach Mike Elko is a former Notre Dame assistant in the Brian Kelly days, but more importantly Leonard’s coach the past two seasons at Duke.
