England take on the Netherlands in the second semi-final of Euro 2024, with both sides looking to book a place in Sunday’s final as they face off in Dortmund. The Three Lions put in an improved performance against Switzerland but still required penalties to reach the semis, with Bukayo Saka shining, but they will know they need to improve again if they are to beat the Dutch.
Gareth Southgate’s men remain slight favourites to make Sunday’s showpiece, but they’ll need to be wary of the threat from players including Cody Gakpo, Xavi Simons and Memphis Depay. Southgate has made one change from the quarter-final win over Switzerland, with Marc Guehi returning from suspension to replace Ezri Konsa in defence and Luke Shaw remain
Earlier, five people were injured as Netherlands fans attacked England supporters before tonight’s Euro 2024 semi-final in Dortmund, UK police said. Videos on social media showed supporters wearing orange Netherlands jerseys throwing stools and glasses outside a city bar, while England fans sheltered inside.

Netherlands 1 – 1 England
England 1-1 Netherlands
20:21 , Mike Jones
21 mins: Everyone reset.
England are level in the game, perhaps a touch fortuitously as that penalty decision will be a controversial one. Harry Kane took the penalty brilliantly though and rid himself of the miss at the World Cup versus France.
The Three Lions were in the ascendancy before the penalty. Can they keep it up?
England 1-1 Netherlands
20:20 , Jack Rathborn
Our Senior Football Correspondent Richard Jolly has the latest from Dortmund:
England have come from behind against Slovakia and Switzerland. This could be a hat-trick of comebacks, though, with Harry Kane restoring parity with a third fine shot in a few minutes. The second, when he hooked a shot over the bar and was caught by Denzel Dumfries, brought his penalty. It was superbly taken and Kane’s bright start may be a sign he is sharper than in previous matches.
GOAL! England 1-1 Netherlands (Kane, 18’)⚽️
20:19 , Mike Jones
18 mins: Harry Kane converts from the spot!
He drills it low to the goalkeeper’s right. Bart Verbruggen dives the correct way and stretches out a hand but he can’t get there. The ball is right in the corner and England are level.
England 0-1 Netherlands
20:17 , Mike Jones
16 mins: Well now. There’s a check for a potential penalty.
When Kane took his shot he was challenged by Denzel Dumfries who clipped the England captain. The referee has been sent over to the pitchside monitor.
He looks at the replay and points to the spot! Wow.
Penalty to England!
England 0-1 Netherlands
20:15 , Mike Jones
15 mins: Harry Kane drops deep to get on the ball, turns towards goal and shoots forcing a sharp stop out of Bart Verbruggen. The Netherlands goalkeeper is into the action for the first time.
England come again. Bellingham plays the ball out to Saka who takes it into the box. He weaves away from a couple of defenders and has a shot blocked.
The ball bounces up for Kane who hooks one towards goal and lifts the effort just over the crossbar!
England 0-1 Netherlands
20:13 , Mike Jones
13 mins: This time it’s Trippier who delivers the cross and finds Declan Rice at the far post. Rice taps the ball into the middle where Harry Kane is waiting but the Dutch manage to hook it clear just before it bounces to the England captain.
Better stuff from England but they need to step it up another level.
Watch: Xavi Simons strikes to give Netherlands the lead
20:12 , Jamie Braidwood
A stunning strike from Xavi Simons, but could Jordan Pickford do better?
England 0-1 Netherlands
20:12 , Mike Jones
11 mins: Kieran Trippier and Phil Foden stand over the set piece. Foden swings it into the box but Nathan Ake is there to nod the ball away.
England recover the ball and get it to Bukayo Saka. He turns back towards goal and gets taken out by Cody Gakpo. Another free kick to England.
England 0-1 Netherlands
20:10 , Jack Rathborn
Our chief football writer Miguel Delaney reacts to that superb goal from Simons:
The Dutch had looked like they started that bit sharper than England, and they’ve just proved it. Xavi Simons knocked Declan Rice off the ball, proceeded to surge forward and then hit one of the goals of the tournament with a soaring strike. Pickford seemed stunned by it. England need to match the Dutch for intensity now.
England 0-1 Netherlands
20:10 , Mike Jones
10 mins: Not at all the start England would have wanted but there’s plenty of time to recover from it. England have gone behind in each of their knockout matches so far so they’re used to this position.
Jude Bellingham takes a knock to the head and needs a bit of treatment as the Three Lions win a free kick in a good area.
GOAL! England 0-1 Netherlands (Simons, 7’)⚽️
20:08 , Mike Jones
7 mins: Wow!
Too much space for Xavi Simons who shrugs Declan Rice off the ball inside his own half. He drives the ball towards the box then rockets a wonderful strike into the far corner!
That is a glorious goal.
England 0-0 Netherlands
20:06 , Karl Matchett
Our football reporter Karl Matchett has noticed something already in Dortmund:
A minor thing, but a change: we’ve already seen England counter-attack twice with some tempo in their passes – in previous games there have been very few occasions when even opportunities to breakaway in numbers and at speed haven’t been instead met by softer, safer passes to feet, not allowing forward momentum to build and defensive lines to be broken. Perhaps a sign of what’s to come…
England 0-0 Netherlands
20:05 , Mike Jones
5 mins: Netherlands beat the English high press and send the ball over to Xavi Simons. Donyell Malen makes a run into the box and wants the early pass which doesn’t come.
Marc Guehi and Kyle Walker get back well and block the path of the ball allowing it to run through to Jordan Pickford.
England 0-0 Netherlands
20:03 , Mike Jones
3 mins: The battle in this match may come in midfield. Jude Bellingham wants a bit of time to work a pass over to Kieran Trippier on the left but he’s harried by Xavi Simons.
A deflected pass loops into the air but Declan Rice is strong enough to hold off Donyell Malen and keep England in possession of the ball.
The early signs are that this match might be a physical fight in the middle of the pitch.
England v Netherlands

Kick off! England 0-0 Netherlands
20:02 , Mike Jones
Kobbie Mainoo gets the ball rolling in this semi-final. England pass the ball to Jordan Pickford who boots a long ball up the pitch. Virgil van Dijk gets there ahead of Harry Kane but only nods the ball back to John Stones who himself heads it forward once more.
After that bit of pinball, the Netherlands come away with possession and look to come down the right wing by sending the ball up to Donyell Malen who times his run slightly wrong and gets flagged offside.
England v Netherlands

Okay then, here we go, it is time.
The second Euro 2024 semi-final is about to get going, the players make their way onto the pitch in Dortmund and wait for the national anthems to be played.
Harry Kane leads out the Three Lions following their penalty shootout victory over Switzerland. Throughout this tournament there have been questions asked about England’s competency and ability to score goals.
Can they put them to bed tonight against a high-flying Netherlands unit?
Virgil van Dijk seems very relaxed at the head of the Netherlands line with the Dutch players already pumped up for this crucial semi-final.
Gareth Southgate claps and salutes the watching crowd. This should be a cracking game. Kick off is up next…
England v Netherlands prediction
19:50 , Mike Jones
England haven’t been the tournament’s great entertainers but may be drawn into a more attack-minded game simply because their Dutch opponents are leaving spaces for counter-attacking.
That may well benefit Gareth Southgate’s side more than he has allowed them to so far.
Netherlands 1-2 England.
England have ‘confronted’ their shortcomings. Next up? Netherlands
19:45 , Mike Jones
As the magnitude of fixture becomes greater, England’s preparation actually becomes less intense. The squad have done most of the actual work already. A bit like with their successful approach to penalties, there can be a danger of over-preparation. Gareth Southgate is instead intent on doing most of the preparation in meetings, ensuring the team are conscious of the different challenges posed by a competent Netherlands side.
This is the benefit that comes with experience, and Southgate now has more semi-final experience than any other England manager in history. As he prepares for his third in a major tournament, it is one reason this occasion feels less momentous, albeit no less invigorating. The team just have bigger ambitions now.

England v Netherlands
19:40 , Mike Jones
The Netherlands have won two different matches having conceded the first goal at Euro 2024, beating Poland 2-1 in the group stages and Turkey by the same score in the quarter-final.
England v Netherlands
19:35 , Mike Jones
England have gone to extra-time in both of their Euro 2024 knockout ties so far. Only Portugal at Euro 2016, Spain at Euro 2020, and Italy at Euro 2020 have ever gone to extra-time three times in a single edition of the finals.
England v Netherlands
19:30 , Mike Jones
In Memphis Depay (17 shots, 10 chances created) and Cody Gakpo (13 shots, 11 chances created), the Netherlands are the only side with more than one player to have both 10+ shots and 10+ chances created.
One or both of Depay and/or Gakpo have been directly involved in…
