Durant and James star as USA thrash Serbia in Olympics opener


The USA have started their Olympic basketball title defence with a dominant victory over Serbia.

Despite the best efforts of Denver Nuggets MVP centre Nikola Jokic, Serbia fell to a 22-point defeat at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.

There was no stopping Team USA, which features 12 NBA All-Stars, four NBA MVPs and six NBA champions, who combined have 11 Olympic appearances and own 10 gold medals.

LeBron James, a two-time gold medallist, registered 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, while Phoenix SunsKevin Durant led the team with 23 points.

Jrue Holiday scored 15 points, Devin Booker 12 with Stephen Curry and Anthony Edwards getting 11 respectively.

The USA, who are going for a fifth straight gold medal, are now joint top of Group C with South Sudan on two points.
