Daniel Brown breaks the code, takes surprising first round lead at The Open

Yahoo Sports’ Jay Busbee reacts to the Englishman’s bogey-free opening round — in his first ever major championship event — that placed him atop the leaderboard at Royal Troon.

Day one of the British Open at Royal Troon is in the books and your leader is Dan Brown who?

No, not the Dan Brown that wrote the Da Vinci Code and other thrillers like that.

This Dan Brown is an English golfer who’s played exactly one more round of major championship golf than you.

And I that round being today when he shot a minus six thanks to birdie on the 16th and the 18th holes to get past Shane Lowry take the lead after day one, an impressive performance all the more so because the rain was blowing sideways, the wind was gusting at 23 miles an hour and most of the field got taken out one way or another by Royal Troon guys like Rory mcilroy Bryson Desam, they found themselves way way deep in the field.

Tiger Woods pretty much almost ejected from the tournament.

There were a few players that played well.

Justin Thomas was one he led through most of the morning minus three, Scotty Scheffler and Brooks Kar right there at minus one.

And then of course, Shane Lowry, the 2019 champion has one stroke back of Dan Brown.

So we’ll have to see how the rest of the weekend goes.

Friday is supposed to be rough weather.

Saturday is supposed to be even rougher than that.

So anybody that can survive these next couple of days in Scotland at Royal Troon is gonna be in good shape.

But right now they’re all chasing a guy named Dan Brown.
