Newfoundland native Alex Newhook will be hosting the inaugural installment of his golf classic today at the Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s. It won’t be about winning the tournament for the participants but rather funding three great causes: the Newfoundland Cancer Care Foundation, the Iris Kirby House and the REAL Program.
The Causes
The Cancer Care foundation raises funds for cancer care throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. It supports four Cancer Centres and affiliated chemotherapy infusion sites. The funds are used to purchase needed cancer treatment equipment and comfort equipment on top of funding continuing education opportunities in oncology for Cancer Care staff and supportive patient programs to help them go through their cancer journey.

The Iris Kirby House was opened in 1981 and provides shelter and a safe heaven for women and children who are experiencing intimate partner violence. It’s a safe house for abused women of all walks of life and the chance to explore alternative living environments. Because of the incredible amount of demands over the years, a sister house needed to be opened in September 2010.

The REAL Program allows children and youth facing financial barriers to participate in recreation, music, dance, art, sports, leadership and learning programs. The program provides registration fees, transportation and equipment.
The Participants
The sold-out event will include 33 foursomes and three of Newhook’s teammates will be teeing up; Josh Anderson, Justin Barron and Jayden Struble. On top of the golfing, there will be a silent auction, an autograph session and a Q & A.
Former NHL goaltender and Olympic Gold Medalist Curtis Joseph will also be in attendance just like PWHL Toronto’s Maggie Connors and fellow Newfoundlander Dawson Mercer.
Canadiens Fundraising Efforts
Newhook is not the only Montreal Canadiens to host such an event. Former Hab player and enforcer Chris Nilan held his earlier in the Summer and raised over $140,000 for the Montreal Children’s Hospital foundation amongst others.
Jonathan Drouin also used to host a golf tournament at the Mirage Golf Club in support of the CHUM’s Foundation. Philip Danault also held a golf classic in Victoriaville before leaving the Canadiens for the Los Angeles Kings.
Of course, the team itself also holds an annual golf tournament to launch the hockey season. Last year, it raised $855,000 in its 47th edition. Every year, the Canadiens players, coaches, executives and alumni tee off in Laval-sur-le-Lac. Since 2000, the event has raised over $9.6 million for the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation.
