Former Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove has credited and thanked his former Giallorossi coach Jose Mourinho for helping to develop and improve as a player during his Fiorentina presentation on Thursday.
Though he didn’t want to initially, Bove left his boyhood club to join Fiorentina on deadline day back in August, signing on loan with an option to buy at the end of the 2024-25 season.
The 22-year-old has since made his Viola debut, appearing as a second-half substitute in the 2-2 home draw with Monza two days after his transfer. On Thursday, he gave his introductory press conference as part of his official presentation.
Bove on Roma exit, Fiorentina decision and Mourinho guidance
“The reason why I chose Fiorentina, aside from the project, is because the club has so much passion, the fans push you and it has the best sports centre in Italy,” Bove said when explaining why he moved to Tuscany. “It’s the perfect place to play lots of games and grow as a player.
“As for Roma, it’s my choice because they told me I wouldn’t have the space I need to become the player I want to be. I was out of the project, I want to be at the centre and playing a key role.”
Bove was also asked what he made of the nickname that Mourinho had given him during their time together in Rome.
Mourinho had labelled Bove a ‘sick dog’ for the way he constantly ‘barks’ at, or pounces on his opponents’ feet. Though he wasn’t sure what he made of the nickname, Bove is still very grateful for the guidance that Mourinho gave him.
“I’ll leave nicknames to fans or coaches. But if I’m saying what I think, most people still haven’t seen the full potential I have and what I feel I can bring.
“Thanks to Mourinho, I have developed and improved certain characteristics, like on the defensive side. Maybe I play the ball less, but I am aware of my abilities and ready to show everyone. The coach was great and I thank him.”
