Heading into the 2024 season, expectations for Ohio State football are extremely high. But according to BetOnline odds for the first college football coach to be fired, Ryan Day is on the list.
Day is tied for the seventh-shortest odds to be the first head coach fired during the 2024 season at 12/1, per BetOnline. Day has the same odds as California coach Justin Wilcox and Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi.
Florida coach Billy Napier is the leader at 4/1 odds.
Day is one of three Big Ten coaches listed along with Maryland coach Mike Locksley (16/1) and Southern California coach Lincoln Riley (25/1).
In five seasons, Day has led Ohio State to a 56-8 record including a 39-3 record against Big Ten opponents. Day’s teams have not beaten Michigan since 2019 and have lost three straight to the Wolverines. Ohio State has also lost four of six bowl game appearances under Day with three College Football Playoff appearances.
According to DraftKings sportsbook, Ohio State has the second-best odds to win the national championship at +400 behind Georgia (+300). The Buckeyes have the best odds to make the College Football Playoff at -650, and are the betting favorite to win the Big Ten at +155.
“There’s a lot of excitement around the program right now,” Day said at Big Ten media days. “We’ve worked really hard to get this team to where it is right now. When you get around our guys, you’ll see that they’re focused. They’re not caught up in the emotion of the expectations of what this is or isn’t. They know we’ve got a long road ahead of us.”
