This year, for the first time, voting for the Ballon d’OneFootball was a collaborative effort across the entire OneFootball editorial team.
In previous years, when the award was won by the likes of Erling Haaland (2023), Mohamed Salah (2022) and Robert Lewandowski (2021), voting was carried out solely by our English-language editorial team.
But for the first time in 2024, votes were instead cast by a judging panel made up of one representative from each of our six core language editorial desks (English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Brazilian-Portuguese) as well as representatives from our Video and Social Media teams.
When casting their votes, each member of the panel was asked to take into account form from the 2023/24 club season, as well as performance at EURO 2024 and the Copa América, before independently submitting their list of the top 20 players in world football right now.
Players were then assigned points based on where they featured on each list. First place got 20 points, second place 19, third place 18, and so on.
Then we multiplied the total number of points for a particular player by the number of people who voted for the player.
This was so somebody couldn’t sneak in just because one or two of our judges rated them highly while the rest didn’t think they were anywhere near that good.
Then we totalled up the points and we had top 10 our ranking, just like that.
Here is our top 10 list so far. The winner will be announced on 27 July 2024.
