Michael Lugiano shot a 2-under 68 in the second round Tuesday to advance to match play of the U.S. Junior Amateur golf tournament.
The Lake-Lehman graduate shot 3-over 143 and tied for 44th during the stroke play portion of the tournament to finish in the top 64 and qualify for the match-play portion, which starts Wednesday.
After opening with a 5-over 75 on Monday on the south course of the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Lugiano quickly climbed the leaderboard. Starting the day tied for 126th, he shot a 2-under 33 on the north course’s back nine, birdieing the par-5 12th and par-4 18th. On the front nine, he birdied the par-4 third hole and bogeyed the par-3 fourth — his only blemish on the day as he added 14 pars.
Lugiano, seeded 47th, will face No. 18 Owen Coniaris of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, in the opening match Wednesday. Tee time is 10:10 a.m. Coniaris shot even par in stroke play.
The tournament champion gets an exemption from qualifying for future U.S. Junior Amateurs and an exemption into the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont.
Wyoming Seminary’s Nick Werner missed the cut, shooting 14-over 154. The senior started the day at 8-over, and bogeyed three of his first four holes on the front nine’s south course before a weather delay. When play resumed, he added a bogey on the par-4 seventh, eighth, 11th and 14th. Werner sunk a birdie on the par-4 16th.
He finished eight shots ahead of Charlie Woods, son of golf legend Tiger Woods.
