Why former USC WR Mario Williams could have a big season for Tulane

Mario Williams has a lot to prove. The 5-9, 175-pound Williams was the fourth-ranked wide receiver in the 2021 class out of Tampa. He signed with Oklahoma for one season. He then headed to USC along with quarterback Caleb Williams for their sophomore campaigns.

Williams has recorded 104 catches for 1,316 yards and 11 touchdowns in his three-year college football career including 23 passes this past season for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

With Tulane losing its top three wide receivers in production last year, Williams will be poised to break out for the Green Wave in 2024.

His quarterback will be Ty Thompson, who has two years of eligibility remaining and is joining a Tulane offense seeking to replace Tulane legend Michael Pratt.

The redshirt sophomore played in three games during his true freshman season in 2021, accounting for 87 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He appeared in seven games in 2022 and then another seven in 2023, when he threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns.

Thompson’s time at Oregon has was mainly backing up Bo Nix at Oregon, but Thompson was a former four-star recruit and top-100 player in the nation.

It will be fascinating to see what Thomspon and Williams are able to achieve this year.
