Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford mega-fight reportedly off

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 14: Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez speaks at a press conference after he defeated Edgar Berlanga during their super middleweight world titles of the Premiere Boxing Championship on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on September 14, 2024. Just 48 hours after the Turki Alalshikh-owned Ring Magazine reported that a deal had been agreed upon for a blockbuster Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford bout, the fight is now reportedly off.

Alvarez vs. Crawford was to take place in September at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on a show organized by Riyadh Season, the entity operated by Alalshikh and Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.

Ring Magazine reported Wednesday night that the fight is now off. No further specifics were given.

Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) are both four-division world champions who are ranked No. 6 and No. 2 on Uncrowned’s pound-for-pound list, respectively. Canelo previously held the undisputed super middleweight title, while Crawford is just one of three men in boxing’s four-belt era to have held all four belts in two different divisions (super lightweight and welterweight).

Crawford has a chance to become a five-division champion if a fight with Alvarez does ultimately materialize, although he will be a heavy underdog due to his size disadvantage. Alvarez currently campaigns at the 168-pound super middleweight limit, while Crawford has only boxed once above 147 pounds, winning a close decision over Israil Madrimov in his most recent bout.

In recent days, rumors suggesting Alvarez could face social-media star turned novice boxer Jake Paul next have intensified.

Alvarez traditionally fights on Cinco De Mayo weekend in May and Mexican Independence Day weekend in September. Paul published a cryptic social-media post on Monday teasing his own potential fight announcement.

Uncrowned will continue to update this story as it unfolds.
