As Manchester City fought their way to a 2-all draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday you could see that City’s midfield could do with reinforcing. That appears to be City’s primary focus next month when the January transfer window opens. Other areas of Pep Guardiola’s squad need strengthening but a midfielder does look to be City’s biggest priority.
With that in mind has City’s main January transfer target now been revealed? If a new report is correct the world champions have their eyes on a player who would be the ideal player to fortify their ailing midfield.
Harry Watkinson has relayed a report from Football 365 for TeamTalk that Pep Guardiola has chosen Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as the player who can solve City’s midfield issues. Furthermore, Watkinson’s report indicates that Manchester City are currently working on a strategy to sign the Spanish international. Lastly, Watkinson reports that Liverpool and Arsenal also have an interest in signing Zubimendi next month.
Martin Zubimendi could step into Manchester City’s midfield instantly and provide the lift Pep Guardiola’s side needs.
In terms of the type of midfielder Manchester City need Martin Zubimendi does fit the bill. The world champions need a player who can step into their midfield straight away. With his experience, pedigree and talent Zubimendi looks to be that player. He has shown for both club and country that he is one of the better-holding midfielders in the game. There is also a poise in possession that Zubimendi possesses that Manchester City have lacked in midfield of late. He is also more than adept defensively and reads the game superbly which would aid City’s cause immeasurably.
Martin Zubimendi would also be able to step into Pep Guardiola’s midfield almost instantly if he did sign for Manchester City next month. That is another huge factor to consider when looking at players that City may target next month. They can’t afford to sign a young player who will need time to develop and adjust to life at the Etihad. Manchester City need a midfielder who can step in straight away and contribute at a high level. Zubimendi looks to be that player, and if the world champions could sign the Spanish international, he would immediately provide a solution to City’s midfield issues.
Based on TeamTalk’s new report it does appear that Manchester City have found the player they believe will strengthen their midfield. Now it looks to be a case of seeing if they can land Martin Zubimendi next month. He ticks every box required as a potential Manchester City signing. Now it is a waiting game to see if City make their move for the Spanish international next month.
