A new era of college athletics began on Friday as the Colorado Buffaloes, Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils and Utah Utes officially joined the Big 12 Conference. All four programs — along with six others — left the Pac-12, which now houses only the Washington State Cougars and Oregon State Beavers.
Colorado was in the Big 12 (previously known as the Big Seven and Big Eight) from 1948-2010 before joining the Pac-12. During those 60-plus years, CU football won six conference championships and the program’s lone national title in 1990.
Here’s how social media reacted to Colorado officially rejoining the Big 12 Conference:

A new world
You woke up today to a world in which:
The Big Ten has 18 football teams, stretching from Piscataway, N.J., to Seattle.
The Big 12 has 16 football teams, from Orlando to Provo, Utah.
The ACC has 17 football teams, from Miami to Stanford.
The Pac-12 has two schools.— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoAP) August 2, 2024
Statement from Brett Yormark
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark in a statement:
“I’m thrilled to officially welcome Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah into the Big 12 family. I’m incredibly excited about what each school brings to our league both on and off the field – great markets, great fan bases…

\u0022An excellently balanced conference\u0022
Thought it had already happened, but Utah, Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado officially join the Big 12 today.
I think it’s an excellently balanced conference both competitively and in terms of pedigree. https://t.co/STemZ08kmR
