The Greater Savannah area has a wealth of talent at the wide receiver position this season with players like Thomas Blackshear of Calvary Day already committed to Georgia, while others are all over the radars of college recruiters.
Here’s a look at the top returning receivers and tight ends in the area as the 2024 high school football season is set to kick off in Georgia in a couple weeks.
Thomas Blackshear, Calvary Day
The highly-recruited senior committed to Georgia in May. He is coming off a junior season set back by injuries, but still had 27 catches for 551 yards with five touchdowns in eight games. He has a new quarterback in sophomore James Mobley with Jake Merklinger now at Tennessee.
Bubba Frazier, Benedictine
The junior had a big spring with the Cadet track and field team as a member of the 4×100 relay team that finished second and the 4×200 relay team that took home a gold medal in the Class 4A state track and field meet, while placing fifth in the 100 meters, where he has a personal best time of 10.69. Last year, he had 53 catches for 753 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 319 yards and four scores. He recently was offered by Georgia.
Doopah Coleman, Calvary Day
Coleman was another Cavalier who saw his junior season impacted by injuries. He had 29 catches for 340 yards and ran for 147 yards, while scoring six total touchdowns. A threat to score anytime he touches the ball, Coleman has offers including Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia.
Kamari Maxwell, New Hampstead
The senior had a senior had 40 catches for 734 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 294 yards and four scores last season. He has offers including Bucknell, Lehigh, Austin Peay and Kent State.
Kenry Wall, Savannah Christian
Wall does it all for the Raiders as a two-way starter with a huge impact. As a junior, He rushed for 1,116 yards with 15 touchdowns and had 19 catches for 500 yards and five more scores. He added 382 yards in kick/punt returns and 73 yards in interception returns, returning three punts and a kickoff for scores to total 24 touchdowns. Wall has offers including Erskine and Shorter University.
Tyon Jones, Bradwell
The senior had a breakout season last year with 45 catches for 1,083 yards and seven touchdowns in 10 games for the Tigers. He has offers including Mercer, Shorter and Georgia State.
Logan Brooking, Savannah Christian
Another two way-star for SCPS, Brooking is committed to Clemson as a tight end and also plays defensive end for the Raiders. He had 38 catches for 544 yards and three scores last year.
Josh Washington, Benedictine
Washington transferred over from Savannah Country Day and will be eligible to play right away in his junior season. He had 38 catches for 445 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 99 yards and a score for the Hornets last season. Washington received an offer from Georgia Southern before starting his high school career.
Jayden Sutton, Islands
Sutton had 24 catches for 383 yards and a pair of touchdowns last season. He’ll be a key offensive player as the Sharks move down from Class 4A to 3A with most of the Savannah city schools. He has offers from Bryan and Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Brooks Kleinpeter, Savannah Country Day
Kleinpeter is a big weapon at tight end for the Hornets as he caught 33 balls for 476 yards and seven touchdowns last year. The senior is also a standout baseball player for the Hornets.
Jacque’s King, Effingham County
The senior is also a standout defensive back for the Rebels and was an All-Region 2-6A first-team pick last season.
Ben Hockman, New Hampstead
The junior had had 46 catches for 753 yards and four touchdowns last season at Florida’s Sante Fe High School. The speedster transferred to New Hampstead before track season started and finished fifth in the Class 4A state meet in the 200 meters with a time of 21.69 seconds and eighth in the 100 meters (10.79).
Jaden Hurd, Liberty County
The senior had 27 catches for 419 yards and four scores last season.
