Since taking over at Oregon in late 2021, Dan Lanning has cast a net over the country. That net landed another one of the nation’s top prospects on Saturday.
Cleveland (Ohio) Shaker Heights five-star safety Trey McNutt announced his commitment to Lanning and the Ducks. He chose Oregon over Florida, Ohio State, Texas A&M and USC.
The 247Sports Composite Rankings list McNutt as the country’s No. 19 overall prospect, the No. 1 safety, and the No. 2 player in Ohio.
A track standout as well, McNutt is coming off a junior season where he excelled on both sides of the ball.
On defense, he totaled 61 tackles, 12 pass breakups, three tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles. At wide receiver, he finished the season with 611 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Ducks remain hot on the recruiting trail
McNutt’s commitment gives Oregon its second five-star commitment so far this cycle. Five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore, a former LSU pledge, committed to the Ducks on Independence Day.
Prior to McNutt’s commitment, the Ducks’ class ranked just outside the top 10. They now have 15 pledges and a class that should move into the top 10 nationally.
The last two cycles have seen Oregon finish with a top 10 class. Their last cycle was the best so far of Lanning’s tenure, finishing No. 4 nationally.
