Why were they nominated?
Because the Brazil sensation has now found the consistency in his game to go with his undoubted qualities, and puts on dazzling performances week after week, sometimes amid the backdrop of horrific abuse.
Viní has now firmly established himself as the star man in a Real Madrid team which is the best in the club game at the moment and when the lights shone brightest, so did he.
In addition to all of the collective honours with his team last season, he was also awarded the Champions League Player of the Season too. Is the real Ballon d’Or destined to follow later this year?
Best moment since the start of 2023/24?
He already had a Champions League winner to his name, netting the only goal of the game against Liverpool in Paris in 2022, and this year helped himself to a clincher in the showpiece game in world football.
Los Blancos held a narrow lead in the closing stages but Borussia Dortmund remained a big threat – until Viní’s cold finish put the result beyond doubt and ensured the trophy would return to the Spanish capital for the 15th time.
The magnitude of that occasion and goal means it narrowly (and we mean narrowly!) beats out his stunning first half hat-trick in El Clásico in January to sink Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final. As we said, the bigger the game, the better he gets.
